Blog Series: A Different Kind of Equine Veterinary Career - Part 3
Part 3 – The Heart of the Practice: Our Team
Our Veterinarians:
Dr. Jack Root – Is proficient in lameness and is a proud member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), an international non-profit dedicated to advancing knowledge in equine athlete lameness. Dr. Root is also widely recognized for his expertise in kissing spine surgeries and is one of only a handful of veterinarians in Oregon performing cryptorchid surgeries. Jack has a lifelong passion for Thoroughbreds, pedigrees, history, and racing. His enthusiasm for life runs in so many directions that it would take an entire blog page to capture all of his adventures! **
Dr. Flynn Magorian – Focused on reproduction, foal care, and advanced dentistry, Dr. Magorian brings a well-rounded approach to both preventative and performance medicine. She and her terrific husband are raising two awesome little boys, who keep them busy with outdoor adventures. Flynn treasures time with her immediate and extended family and loves making memories in the great outdoors.
Dr. Tara O’Brien – With her expertise and strong interest in lameness, like Dr. Root, is a member of ISELP, keeping her at the forefront of the latest lameness diagnostics and treatments. Tara and her dog Bandit are outdoor adventure enthusiasts who know more about the trails and hidden spots of the Northwest than most lifelong residents! Originally from New York, she also has a sharp eye (and tastebuds) for good food and enjoys exploring the culinary experiences of the region.
Dr. Claire Kaplan – Passionate about reproduction and emergency care, particularly laceration management, while actively expanding her expertise in advanced diagnostics. Claire enjoys movies, is an avid reader, and has a deep appreciation for the outdoors. She also has a love for exploring art, and we hope she’s discovering the vibrant artistic communities along the Oregon Coast and in Portland.
Our Support Staff:
Behind every great veterinary team is an incredible group of people who keep the wheels turning day in and day out. At Oakhurst, we’re fortunate to have a crew that brings energy, dedication, and heart to everything they do.
Ben keeps our operations running smoothly, while Andrea handles purchasing and makes sure we’re always stocked with what we need. Stephanie, our office manager, is the glue that holds the front end together, with Dakota supporting operations every step of the way.
On the veterinary side, Courtney wears two hats as both office support and lead veterinary assistant, while Riley steps in as assistant lead. Reilly, one of our veterinary assistants, is soon heading off to nursing school, and Alex is preparing applications for veterinary school—proof that our team is always learning and reaching for more. Angie and Millie round out our group of veterinary assistants, each bringing their own strengths and reliability to the barn and clinic.
And of course, none of this would be possible without our barn crew. Agustine, Alfredo, Brock, Sara, and Kieren make sure our horses are happy, comfortable, and well cared for, while also keeping the grounds looking their best.
Together, this team keeps Oakhurst moving forward—supporting our veterinarians, our clients, and most importantly, our horses.
