Blog Series: A Different Kind of Equine Veterinary Career - Part 2
Part 2 – A Day in the Life at Oakhurst
What’s it really like to be an equine veterinarian at Oakhurst?
We’ll let you in on a secret: it’s not the marathon, never-ending grind you might imagine. Yes, the work is exciting and sometimes unpredictable (we are working with horses, after all!), but there’s balance, rhythm, and a team behind you every step of the way.
Here’s what a typical day might look like for one of our associates:
Morning: Getting Started
Your day begins with a plan—not chaos. Our support staff and techs make sure your schedule is organized, supplies are stocked, and calls are confirmed. Emergencies that might come in are triaged among the group or partnering with local veterinarians when necessary to keep the day manageable.
You might start with a lameness workup in the arena, a pre-purchase exam, or an appointment with a long-time client. Each case is different, but what’s consistent is the support: you’re never running solo without backup.
Midday: Variety in the Caseload
By mid-morning, you could be on the road for a farm call or in the clinic with haul-ins — anything from reproductive work (ultrasounding mares, collecting stallions, or managing foals) to dentistry or routine wellness care.
Afternoon: Teamwork in Action**
Back at the clinic, maybe you’ve got a surgery assist scheduled, or you’re consulting on a tricky case. You’ve got access to imaging, advanced diagnostics, and a team that loves brainstorming tough problems together.
One of the things our associates say they value most? Having people to bounce ideas off of. You’re not an island here—you’re part of a crew that’s passionate about horses and about each other.
Evening: Wrapping Up, Not Burning Out
Evening: Wrapping Up, Not Burning Out
When your last appointment is done and records are finished, your day truly ends. Your time off is protected, and your personal life matters just as much as the horses you care for. No endless late nights, no “always on” expectations—because rest and balance make us better veterinarians and better people.
Why It Matters
At Oakhurst, a day in the life is more than just cases on a schedule. It’s structure, balance, reliable backup, and a team that has your back—every single day.
